What You Need To Become A Professional Photographer: Skills Vs. Camera - Elizabeth Nwansi Blog

As a photographer, I often get asked questions about the best camera to buy for someone who is just starting out. While having a good camera can definitely make a difference in the quality of your photos, I always tell people that it’s not the most important thing when it comes to becoming a professional photographer. In fact, I would argue that your skills as a photographer are far more important than the camera you buy.

What It Means To Be A Skilled Photographer

To understand why this is the case, let’s first take a look at what it means to be a skilled photographer. At its core, photography is about capturing a moment and creating an image that tells a story or evokes a certain emotion. This requires a deep understanding of things like composition, lighting, color, and subject matter. These are all things that a photographer must be able to control and manipulate in order to create an effective photograph.

While a good camera can certainly help with some of these elements, it’s ultimately up to the photographer to make the most of the tools they have. This means that a skilled photographer can create amazing images with just about any camera, while an inexperienced photographer will struggle to produce quality work even with the most expensive equipment.

Skills That Are Important To Become A Professional Photographer

Here are a few that I think are particularly crucial:

Composition

The way that you arrange the elements in your photograph can have a huge impact on the final image. This includes things like the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing.

Lighting

Understanding how to use light to your advantage is key to creating dynamic and engaging images. This includes things like knowing when to use natural light vs. artificial light, as well as how to manipulate the light to create a certain mood or effect.

Color

Color can be used to create a mood or tell a story in your photographs. A skilled photographer knows how to use color to their advantage, whether it’s through the use of color theory or the manipulation of hues and saturation.

Subject matter

Knowing how to choose and capture an interesting subject is key to creating a compelling photograph. This involves understanding what makes a subject interesting or visually appealing, as well as how to position the subject in the frame.

All of these skills can be developed through practice and study, regardless of what type of camera you have. In fact, some of the best photographers in the world have created stunning images with nothing more than a simple point-and-shoot camera.

What Sets A Professional Photographer

That being said, it’s important to note that having a good camera can certainly make a difference in some situations. For example, if you’re shooting in low light or need to capture fast-moving action, a camera with a high ISO range or fast shutter speed can be incredibly helpful. Additionally, if you’re looking to print your images at a large size, a camera with a high megapixel count will produce better results.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that these features are just tools that skilled photographers can use to their advantage. Having the latest and greatest camera won’t automatically make you a great and professional photographer, just like having the most expensive paintbrushes won’t make you a great painter.

At the end of the day, what really sets a professional photographer apart is their ability to see the world in a unique way and to capture that vision through their images. This requires a deep understanding of the technical aspects of photography, as well as a creative eye and a willingness to experiment and take risks.

So if you’re just starting out in photography, don’t worry too much about having the perfect camera. Instead, focus on developing your skills and learning as much as you can about the craft. With practice and persistence, you’ll be able to create amazing images no matter what camera you have in your hands.
