Ever sat there staring at a blinking cursor wondering what in the world you need to be posting to your Instagram account? What Instagram caption should you create?

You’re not alone, take one look at the Pinterest search bar, and the number one Instagram category that pops up is “Instagram Captions”. It seems easy enough, but often what happens is we get so stuck on the what, that we end up posting nothing at all.

In today’s post, I’m going to give you the formula for determining exactly what to post on your account so that you can stay consistent and continue to serve those people who are thinking about working with you.

MY 4 STEPS TO KILLER INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS:

Identify your ideal client:

Who is it you’re looking to serve? Engaged couples, families, newborn parents, and entrepreneurs looking for branding photos?

The very first thing you need to know is your audience and who your content is intended for. Otherwise, it’s like shooting in the dark and writing for the sake of writing. Take some time to get clear on who your intended audience is (the more niche the better!)

Identify Their Struggles and Goals:

Write down problems they might be experiencing, questions they might have, and things they need to know but don’t think to ask. Do some research on your ideal client and start brainstorming all of how you can serve them by what you are writing for your Instagram caption.

The key here is to serve, serve, serve, and serve some more. Give the people who are looking at your account for the first time a reason to hit that follow button and also look forward to upcoming posts.

Have Content Buckets:

Pick 3-5 content buckets. Content buckets are different aspects of your brand that all still fall under the same umbrella. For example, if you are a baker you could have these buckets:

  • BTS of baking
  • Personal posts
  • Gluten-free recipes
  • Happy customer testimonials

You use these buckets to rotate content between your posts. This gives people different touchpoints to access within your bakery brand so that you are never posting about just one thing.

I recommend always adding in personal things especially on your Instagram caption since that gives people a connection to you. It shows that there is a human behind the brand. Here’s how it looks when we combine Tips #2 & #3.

Example: Have you ever wondered how in the world bakers create fondant patterns for kids’ birthday cakes? Hit play on the video above where I’m taking you behind the scenes of Bakers Cakes Co. as we create a badass Spongebob Cake. (Include a reel of you behind the scenes.)

This features the behind-the-scenes bucket and it answers a common question.

Have A Call To Action:

Create a call to action that invites people to do something with the post. It sounds strange enough but I’ve learned that people need to be told/asked something in order for them to respond

In a call to action, we are asking the person reading the post to do something at the very end. You could ask them to leave some emojis in the comments, send you a DM for something, or click the link in your bio. Whatever it is, make sure to leave a call to action at the end of each post. Here’s how it looks with the above caption:

Example: “Have you ever wondered how in the world bakers create fondant patterns for kids’ birthday cakes? Hit play on the video above where I’m taking you behind the scenes of Bakers Cakes Co. as we create a badass Spongebob Cake. (Include a reel of you behind the scenes.) We only have 2 more openings left for November birthday cakes, if you’d like to order something one of a kind for your kiddo comment below CAKE or shoot us a DM to reserve your cake design!”

The secret to killer captions is a strategy and once you do that you can say buh-bye to inconsistency and not knowing what to post.

Get rid of the doubt and start getting strategic with your photography business. In fact, if you’re looking for a little head start with your content, I’ve put together our free guide 30 Days of Instagram Content for Wedding Photographers.
