Morning Routine For Work From Home Moms

A morning routine is quite simply what it says. It’s a set of habits or motions that you go through when you wake up. It helps to set your day up in the right way and can have some drastic effects on your focus and productivity. That is why it is vital for work-from-home moms to have a morning routine.

The past 8 years have been deliciously slow and ironically, at the same time seem to have passed me by in a split second. It’s so cliche, and I used to cringe when older moms said this to my young mom, but now I truly understand when they say “Enjoy it, it passes by in a second”.

Some part of me luckily understood the importance behind this message, and I became dedicated to always prioritizing our family first before work. That looked like a lot of different things over the years of building my photography business, and now as we grow Elizabeth Nwansi Co., our coaching and education side, but there has always been one question that has remained constant throughout.

How can I build a business around my priority as a wife & homeschooling momma of 3 kids?

How can I prioritize my family first AND grow a successful business?

I consider myself like a human science experiment, and I have tried every hack, time-saving tool, and course, and read every book under the sun to see what works. After 8 years of this here’s one aspect that will absolutely change the game for you.

It’s your morning routine.

As a work-from-home mom – a well-thought-out and consistent morning routine are GAME-CHANGING. Seriously. So here’s what has been working for me for months now. The 5 ways to streamline the morning routine for work-from-home moms:

WAKE UP EARLIER THAN THE KIDS

I know, it’s the last thing you want to do and sometimes impossible to do if you were up all night with your baby. But as much as you can, make it a priority to wake up about an hour before your kids wake up. I wake up anytime between 4:30 am to 6:30 am, and when I started to do this, the difference in how I took control of the rest of the day really was night and day.

AFFIRMATIONS

The very first thing I do after I get my water is grab a paper I printed out of affirmations and read them in the mirror to myself. We have a little mirror in our living room, so I don’t have to do it anywhere that might wake the kids up. I did feel really crazy at first, but there was enough evidence to prove that doing this is essential. I’m currently going through a list of money and success affirmations. I love the continued confidence and assurance it gives me when I inevitably struggle from time to time with doubt.

EAT THE FROG

Whatever it is for work I am dreading doing for the day, this is when I do it. When the house is still quiet, and my brain is fresh and unfrazzled by screaming children all day. This is the time that the thing I really don’t want to do takes the least amount of effort. Here’s the beautiful thing:

GET KIDDO TIME

At this point, the kids have woken up, and I’ve done the important thing for my work. We snuggle together for a while, and then we have our morning routine we do every day. Brush our teeth, make our beds, tidy up our bedroom, and head off to go make breakfast together. My girls currently love making breakfast with me, so it’s a great time to spend together. Also, Saint, who is 2 years old, typically toddles around and plays with whatever is in sight.

MORNING CLEAN UP

After breakfast we tackle cleaning up the mess together, one kid will do the dishes, one will dry them, and I will sweep up the mess and clean up the surface spaces. I’m big on teaching our kids that we are all responsible for the caring of our home together, and it’s not a chore…it’s just something you do as a family. After this, we all separate to go get ready and finish our chores – I will dress Saint and myself and get everything ready for our morning walk. The girls will get dressed, then feed our cat or water our outside garden. Everyone meets up together with me in the bathroom so I can do their hair for the day, and then it’s time to go for our morning daily walk.

MORNING WALK OUTSIDE

House is clean, beds are made, chores are done, and we’re all ready for the day. Each kid grabs a bike, scooter, or skateboard, and we head outside and do our same neighborhood walk for the next 45 minutes. I’ve found that getting outside every day is so good for mental health and I also like to wear an Apple watch to make sure I’m getting my 10k steps in a day. Typically with our walk, I’ll get about 4k steps in which is a great start to my day. After the walk, my blood is flowing, and I’m feeling super energized, so it really is great.

Lastly, after this, it’s a mixed bag, some days we’ll go right to school together. On other days our school consists of heading out to a museum or a library, and on other days we’re doing school by going out and running errands together. I really believe school isn’t a set time where you sit down and do worksheets, but also about teaching life skills and learning through living.

This morning routine has really changed the game for the rest of my day, and our kids love the consistency of knowing what to expect every morning when they wake up.
